Week 9 Activity #20 Podcasts

I checked out some of the tools from Podcast.net and Yahoo Podcasts, both have displayed the info quite different. Great to punch in whatever topic you want and it will bring up the list of every podcast on that topic.
There were quite a few for libraries - Library channel, Open stacks. Library Playground, and for Book reviews many ex. Fred's world, Nancy Pearls Book reviews, and Teen Podcasting book reviews, just to name a few. This was quite interesting, although I had trouble viewing them. There were a couple of interest to me, Knitting step by step, All things fun.

I have seen the video clip before around Nov. llth they usually show it on the Canadians War Veterans site, It is certainly one everyone should view, get the meaning across of "Remembrance Day". Never knew the You Tube existed, but it certainly a great way to check out a subject and see what videos have been done. Very much enjoyed. Helen

Interesting to check out the video sites. It would be a great way to advertise an upcoming event ( in a video form) makeing it accessible to all. Great for social networking, whether it google maps, delicious, or technorati, or blogs, wikis. Its very interactive. I enjoyed the sports clips, and the adds are very creative, certainly some vids. for advertising a product are very well done, and you will remember seeing the video, gets your attention. it.

Library 2.0 video - Manifesto --Thought this was very well done, and start ones thinking about what we need to do to keep up with what the public requires of us.
Recognizing these requirements and incorporating them into the services that we can try to offer in the upcoming years. And having the websites set up so that users can also contribute through blogs, etc. would be very beneficial to Libraries so we are keeping up to date with their current requirements.User feedback is very important so we are moving in the right direction of their current needs.

Great info to see the ratings on the vids. The comments you can leave on site, add to your favourites, share, or post, lo ts of interaction.

Web 2.0 tools #19

Fun checking out the different site, and even more that they have rated the 3 best in all the categories, certainly saves a lot of work for people checking them out.
In checking these tools out, I found lots of sites that would be very help to all.
Sites I checked out for
Books--Lulu >( for people interested in publishing their own and selling world wide.
Judys books - shows what city has the best sales on their books prices, publishers coupons available etc.

Business sites -- I check out the one called " Instant Bull"- with lots of categories to choose from, punch in your stock and catch up on all the news of how it is doing through business magazines, blogs and ratings, articles.

Maps sites - for the most current up to date maps, and directions, with many to choose from, but nice it lists the top rated 3.
Medical tool sites - just type in your subject and then it will take you to lots of information, you can leave questions on this site, for repsponse, even having the delic.ios site so you could keep track of only the info sites you wanted.

Google Docs #18

This has been an interesting lesson, I did try to actually make up some forms docs. from the "Zoho writer" and added some tabs, I did find it a little confusing but played around with it, did some searches and tried to post them to my blog.

Google Docs--

I think this would certainly be very helpful to students or just about everyone, the fact that you can do a doc. and save that doc on line, so others also have access to it, and yet you don't have to carry around the drive or diskette. Also publishing doc. as a public file would be helpful to many, so that they are able to read it as a webpage. Handy that you don't have to buy and install a program to do a lot of these things that are listed both by Google Doc. and Zoho writer. - Helen

Sandbox

It was fun playing with the "sandbox, and that you could list any subjects and also have others contribute to it. Fun to also check what others had put in it also, with their pictures etc. Interesting that anyone can "edit" or edit any part of it also. This one was fun!! Helen

Favorite books, Pets, and places to Travel

The book that I have enjoyed lately is A Portrait of Owen Sound, 1905-1955 which I have purchased my own copy of. I really find the old photos so interesting and just to see the same locations now and how it has all changed, or some of it may still have been preserved,. I really find fascinating.

WIKIS - #16 WEEK 7

I have checked out some of the Wiki sites and they seem very interesting, expecially the "Bull Run Library Site. I clicked on the Library Elf Link, and it is amazing that there is a tool for people to use in having a reminder telling them when to bring their library materials back, checking Library cards, and tracking library materials. This would be so very useful for many of our library patrons.

Library 2.0 #14 # 15 Week 6

What Library 2.0 means to me--- In reading through the different articles on Web 2.0 information, it certainly makes one realize that the technology is changing so quickly, it is really hard to keep up with it all. It does show that Libraries are certainly doing a good job at trying to keep up with those changes. Therefore, helping the library users around the world, by giving them access to a lot of these new tools. Just by informing the patrons and communites about these new tools, that they are or will be available now or down the road is a big step forward.
In the article by Rick Anderson, " Away from the icebergs" he talks about eliminating the barriers that exist between patrons and the information that they need, helping them in these
areas, such as interfaces so they actually have more time reading and learning.Also he mentioned that we have to find new ways to bring our services to patrons rather than insisting they come to us. With most people having access to computers now a days, either at libraries, schools or at home, the more inventive ways to use this info for research, everyday uses, such as
banking on line, checking newspaper information web sites, travel web sites, booking tickets on line, downloading pics from their digital camera or phone are all ways this new technology is there for us to learn, right at our finger tips. It amazes me to see just how much more info is available on the computer, and learning some of these tools has certainly made me more aware of what is available for us all. I was amazed to see on the news the other night a new game called " Second Life" from London Eng. I believe, where you could actually subscribe, and become a computer player in the game, and interact with other players on line from their home computers, through everyday situations. Wow! Just that these capabilities are available amazes me. Certainly with our own Library and the communities around that we are serving, I think, to keep them interested in using our services, it is very necessary for us to be up to date with the most recent technology available, but to make them aware of all our capablities, that there is something for one and all at the library. Like Rick Anderson says in his article " It's going to have to happen one library - one little boat - at a time.

Another interesting article was the one by Chip Nilges - " To more powerful ways to cooperate"talks about the "collective intelligence" and what they have planned over the next year with professionals and library patrons and others to contribute to and use the WorldCat. I can only imagine what a vast amount of info, this would open up for library users. Their plans for the World Cat access and the principles of Web 2.0 concept will certainly help libraries try and keep up with this changing technology thats available.

I think in todays world, I certainly have to agree with Dr.Wendy Schultz - " To a temporary place in time, she mentions that Libraries are not merely in communities, they are communities: they preserve and promote community memories..........."
Libraries today, are so very different from years ago with so much more information out there and the computers with tools they can now use to find that information.

I tried to organize a couple of favorite blogs on England Villages, and also tried tagging then. I also did try checking out some of the other blog sites, but did still find it rather confusing, a lot to comprehend all at once. It was interesting to see just all it does, with other people's blog available to read about a certain subject. I probably wouldn't use this very much myself, but none the less is still good to check out what capabilites there really are with all these new tools.

I set up a Del.icio.us account and bookmarked some sites on England . I also tagged them for future reference, if I decide to take a trip there. It was good practice setting up this account & to see how it would be a great benefit in doing research on a particular top, and finding my favourite sites quickly using the tags. There were some other good sites on OSNGUPL and it was also interesting to see how many people had viewed that site, and some who had left a comment on how useful the site was. Also to view the most popular tag words they had used.

Travel rollyo tool

I did a travel Rollyo to search all the sites that I would like to check from time to time, on different countries I would like to see, sometime. This was very interesting and a very good way to narrow a search with just the sites I want to view on a subject.

Using the generators was fun, checking out all the different ones to choose from like the Glitter Bubblegum site, My fun cards site,& Profile Pitstop. Amazing to see all the creative things that are available for us to use. Some were free to downloan, others that we would have to subscribe to, may have a cost. It was also fun downloading these right into my blog. Using the Library Thing was also interesting, to see how it would group the differenct subject of titles together and to keep track of them in my own listing/ Library.
